Rebekah and Elijah are both gone when Hayley wakes. Elijah, she knows, is at the college, teaching. Where Rebekah is, she's got no idea--there's no note in the kitchen when she goes down to make her tea. Shrugging, she doesn't really think much of it--she's slept in pretty late, a glance at the clock tells her. Clearly the danger of keeping vampire hours.

She's got class later this afternoon, but there are a few hours before that, and Elijah usually comes home for lunch, takes her back with him. Not that she can't do it herself, but...it makes him happy and whatever.

Still tired from the party, she wanders the house with her tea, bemused by how large it is, by the fact that she's here. She winds up in the parlor, picking at the piano keys, then pauses when she catches something out of the corner of her eye in the mirror. She's up off the piano bench, heart pounding, and spinning to the other side of the room, the part reflecting in the mirror, then back to the mirror. Nothing's there.

Shaking her head, she heads upstairs to get dressed for the day...and it happens again in the mirror at the top of the stairs. Another spin, almost slipping on the steps, but saved by her werewolf balance. It's weird, and she doesn't like it, thinks about calling Elijah, but...she's tired, right, and last night was Halloween. She's thinking too much about witches and the Other Side and dropping veils and all of that, obviously.

When it happens a third time in the bathroom mirror, someone almost overlaid over her own image but blurry in the steam (and when she wipes off the mirror, there's just her), she's officially spooked. She gets dressed quickly: long skirt, light sweater tunic, boots, and grabs her keys and heads downstairs. Whatever. She and Elijah can have lunch on campus. She is so not sticking around to be ghost-bait--or let her own imagination get the best of her.

Damon was curious about why the Originals were playing house with Klaus' hybrid. Was it some stupid sense of honor on Elijah's part? Was there something else there he didn't know about? He didn't like not knowing about things, especially when those things involved Mikaelsons.

So he'd decided to go right to the heart of the matter and ask the wolf girl himself. He made sure Elijah and Rebekah weren't home and then went up to the door and knocked. Hopefully he could get some answers from the girl, or maybe he'd get a chance to snoop around for himself and discover a secret or two hidden within the walls of the big house.

"Nice to see you again, too," Damon replied with a charming smile, leaning against the doorframe. The first step was getting her to trust him enough to let him in. "You seem to have settled in quite comfortably."

"What? Ric is fine," Damon answered, looking irritated for a moment before schooling his expression back to 'charm' mode. "Actually, I was looking for you. Lucky you."

Damon hadn't even bothered trying the threshold. He assumed the Original Pains had compelled the owner of the house to let them all in for just this purpose. "Just wanted to get to know you better," he replied cheerfully.

Because he wanted to know what was so special about her that it had Elijah and Rebekah setting up house with her. But before he could bother to come up with a plausible lie, her attention was pulled somewhere else. He frowned, peering past her. "See what?"

"--What the hell?" Damon exclaimed, staring in disbelief as some crazy woman straight out of a horror movie just appeared out of thin air and started to attack Hayley, blinking in and out of existence.

Instinctively he tried to move toward her, but was stopped by the threshold. "Shit!" Whether he cared about her or not, standing by and watching her die was sure to be bad for his health, if the Originals were both so interested in her well-being. "Invite me in!" he shouted, pressing uselessly against the invisible barrier barring his entry.

Damon moved forward cautiously, making sure the threshold wouldn't stop him, and then sped to her side once he was in, grabbing for the--whatever it was to throw it off of Hayley, only to have it dissolve like smoke under his fingers. "What. The. Fuck?" he growled, spinning around to try to find the creature again. "Who did you piss off?"

"Sure." Damon caught movement out of the corner of his eye and whirled, only to find nothing there. "I really need to learn how to fight a ghost," he grumbled. "It's disturbing how relevant this skill has become to my life." He turned back in time to see her going over but not enough to halt the fall. That was okay, she was probably safer on the floor. "Stay down," he suggested, moving to hover over her in what he would vehemently deny later was a protective stance.

If asked, Damon would probably blame his helpfulness on the fact that if she was important to the Mikaelsons he could get some leverage by keeping her safe. It would even be true, if not necessarily the whole truth.

"No kidding," he muttered, swearing as the apparition became solid again, getting between him and the wolf girl. He reached down to grab the tattered collar of the woman-thing, only to have it turn to mist again, leaving him off-balance enough that he went over. He caught himself on his elbows, keeping his full weight from hitting her, but close enough to get smeared with her fresh blood. Fortunately he didn't have any open wounds yet.

He scrambled to his feet, getting more of her blood on him in the process, and looked around wildly. This was getting annoying.

Once again, there was no sign of the whatever it was. He looked back at Hayley, the strengthening smell of blood from her new wounds making his face transform even though he had no intention of drinking any of this particular blood, thank you very much.

He realized she was unconscious and groaned. "Shit." Now he was solo, she couldn't even try to protect herself. Maybe he should think about just getting the hell out of here while he could.

The first thing that Rebekah realises is that the house smells of blood and of fear. It's a mix that she usually would enjoy, but not here, not in her home.

"Hayley?" She calls out, worry clear in her voice. "Elijah? Jesse, stay here."

Rebekah barks it out, not considering that Jesse might not actually listen to her. She zips through the house, and what she sees is worse than what she's imagined. Damon standing over Hayley, covered in blood. She doesn't even pause before tossing him against a wall, holding him there with an arm across his neck. "What did you do to her?"

Jesse knew that he should probably listen to Rebekah but Hayley's was his friend too, he wasn't going to just stand here while she was hurt. Besides, he was sure Rebekah could handle whatever was in here.

Running through the house after Rebekah when Jesse came upon Hayley's he almost wished he had stayed where he was.

"Oh shit," he hissed, kneeling down next to Hayley. "Oh man, Rebekah she's lost a lot of blood, we need to get her to a hospital."

"I didn't do anything," Damon gritted out, voice strained from the whole being pinned to the wall by his throat. "There's something here. Some ghost-thing or something!"

Rebekah focuses her will on Damon, her words nearly a growl as she compels him, "don't move an inch."

She leaves him there, not considering that it might not work, crouching beside Hayley. "Hayley, can you hear me?"

"We need to call an ambulance," Jesse said, reaching into his pocket to try and get his phone out. His hands were trembling though and slick blood, the phone fumbling out of his fingers and onto the ground.

"Just hang on, Hayley. We'll get some help."

Like hell Damon wasn't going to move. Rebekah and her stupid compulsions were the reason he'd made it priority one to track down vervain in this place and get back into daily doses of it.

He followed Rebekah over to Hayley, staying on his feet and keeping an eye out for the stupid spirit who could still very well be here. "See?" he challenged from behind Rebekah when Hayley confirmed his story. "And the--" he looked at Jesse, wondering what he knew. "Hayley's right," he finished without mention of her wolfy status, watching their backs and resenting every second of it. "We should all get out of here."

"Don't call a doctor," she hisses at Jesse, knowing that they can't involve a human doctor in this. He'd have too many questions about Hayley, and that could be dangerous. It's only after a moment that she realises Damon is behind her, her eyes flat and dangerous as she looks up at him, knowing he's ressited her compulsion. That makes her extremely unhappy, but right now it's Hayley she's worried about.

"Then help, Damon. Help me get Hayley up and out of here," she says pointedly.

Jesse watched with wide eyes as Hayley's body healed itself. He knew that vampires and werewolves healed fast in most mythologies but actually seeing it in practice was more than a little freaky. Really, really fortunate for Hayley but also a little freaky.

"As someone who cannot heal like that? I also vote for getting out of here," Jesse said, reaching out to take Hayley by the arm and help her up.

Damon snorted. "I've played white knight enough for one day, Barbie Klaus," he told Rebekah, but he did continue watching their backs as they got Hayley to her feet and mobile...ish. "It's bad for my complexion. Now get her out of here before that thing comes back, because if it does the only ass I'm saving is my own."

Rebekah's too busy helping Hayley up to let Damon feel the brunt of her annoyance. "Charming, as always, Damon. More concerned about your own ass than anyone else's."

She starts them moving toward the door. "Hayley, what happened?"

Jesse was all for saving everyone's ass. He told himself that if the thing attacked again the two vampires could handle it. He had to tell himself that because right now he was refusing to believe there was scarier stuff in the city than vampires, he needed to think that for his sanity.

"Where's Elijah?" he asked, worried that Elijah was maybe inside, almost dead in one of the rooms.

Since no one in the room was particularly important to him, damn right he was only concerned with his own ass--or more concerned, anyway. Clearly there was at least some element of a lie in his words, since he was still here, and since he'd tried to help Hayley in the first place, despite the fact that he hadn't had to.

He walked backwards, half-listening to their conversation and half-anticipating another attack. Hayley's explanation made him hope silently that Rebekah would be too busy rescuing her brother's precious pet hybrid to pursue a line of questioning on why he'd happened to be here to help Hayley. At least until he was less distracted and could come up with a convincing lie.

"We can go to my apartment. It's still in my name." She's not quite ready to stop paying the rent on it, not yet, having only had the house for a few months. It's closer to Jesse as well, and she likes having some space. Rebekah keeps her arm tight around Hayley, not wanting anything to happen to her or the baby. When she sees the door, she breathes a sigh of relief. "Jesse, I can support her. You call my brother, seeing as somebody is going to be absolutely no use."
